Tobias Kvendseth’s practice encompasses ceramics, installation, and sound. He particularly explores how form and sound serve as tools to investigate man-made environments, objects, and internal states through sculptural forms and installations. “Hypokrise” describes a duality that arises despite itself—regarding who is protected and who is not. The exhibition examines the duality between violence and protection. The ceramic sculptures are based on armour and weaponry found in both man-made and natural environments, serving to investigate our needs for protection—whether innate or constructed. By referencing the body and the garments we wear as bearers of intention, these sculptures acquire a performative and bodily quality.
Kvendseth focuses on an artistic practice that bridges concept and design, aiming to communicate abstract themes in an accessible way. He views art as something speculative—a tool for observing and revealing the remote aspects of the psyche and how it shapes the objects around us. He strives to develop a practice that pushes the boundaries of how ceramics are perceived and the contexts in which they function, utilising nuances in form, material, and surface treatment. By drawing upon established styles, visual languages, and mindsets, he seeks to create new objects, spaces, and presentations that give a physical dimension to internal states and actions.
